Forest School

The children had a great time taking part in Forest School with Mr. Boucher. They found lots of newts, froglets and frogs during their pond dipping activity and then enjoyed making a campfire and toasting marshmallows on sticks. By the looks on the children's faces a good day was had by all.

Enterprise Sponsored Mile Run

The children showed a great deal of stamina and resilience when taking part in their sponsored mile run to raise money for our end of year enterprise project of a "Theatre in a Day". The children ran around the field at least 9 times to achieve the 1 mile goal with most of the children running more! A massive achievement. Not only did they carry on for the last 2 laps in torrential rain but did so with massive smiles on their face! A massive well to to each and every Cherry!

Sports Day

We had a fabulous Sports Day! The sunshine was out, the children were on top form and and we all had a wonderful time taking part in different sporting activities. The children showed great team work cheering each other on, resilience (even when they got tired!) and all with a great big smile on their faces. During our 100m sprints, James was the fastest Year one boy followed by William who came second and for the girls, Scarlett secured 1st place. Overall Axe came first for Sports Day 2019! What a fantastic day!

Geography - Our Local Area

The children have been learning about where they live this week. We found Europe, the United Kingdom, Somerset and Bridgwater on Google Earth. We used Digi maps to find and plot the different amenities near our school. We then took our maps on a walk to help us navigate our way around our local area and find the different places we had circled. We found the canal, the shops, Westfield House, Penrose School, YMCA, Westfield Church and St Matthew's field. We saw the ambulance station and the paramedics invited us to look around the ambulance. They turned the sirens and lights on for us...we were very lucky!

Health & Fitness Week

The children have loved being involved in Health and Fitness this week! We had "Wake and Shake" everyday after lunch as a whole school, took part in extra P.E sessions practising for Sports Day and started using our new "Inspired Playgrounds". We also had our Year 1 100m sprint sessions to find the fastest 3 girls and fastest 3 boys. The results will be announced on Sports Day (Thursday 6th June- am) where the children will be presented with a medal for a podium finish! We took the parachute outside and practised sounding out and blending words in phonics. We had to find the missing phoneme/digraph/trigraph in the word. With all these activities we managed to each do 410 minutes of exercise in just 1 week (not including break times and lunchtimes!)

"Pyjamarama Day"

We dressed up in our PJ's to raise money for "Book Trust". Overall we raised 346. That's amazing!

Jigsaw Jack - Relationships

During our PHSE lessons with Jigsaw Jack we have been learning about relationships in terms of our family, our friends, appropriate ways to greet people, that we have the right to stay safe and how it feels when we feel special. To celebrate what we have learnt we had a "Balloon Fiesta" in class. We picked a name out of a hat and had to write a tag to say why that person was special to us. We then tied our tags onto a balloon and presented these to the friend we had picked. This was really lovely and all the kind words our friends shared with us made us all feel very special. We got to keep our balloons and tags and took them home. Some of the lovely things our friends said about us was you are special because..."you make me laugh!", "You always help me!", "You are a kind friend and play with me", "You're really clever!".

Mercredi Magnifique

We had a magnifique day with a French theme. Madame Latham (our French teacher) delivered our "pink box" full of surprises. The children opened the box and found lots of different clues as to what they would be learning. Inside the box was a French flag, some pain au chocolat, french stick, brie, chocolate spread, jam and brioche. We guessed from the flag that we would be learning all about France! Madame Latham came and read a book in French all about a family making a Pizza. We then had to choose our learning based on the French goodies we had. We decided as a class to make our own craft pizzas. We learnt the french words for the different ingredients we used and then loved tasting all the different French foods. I think the Brie was our favourite. We had a "Wonderful Wednesday!"

Mary Seacole & Florence Nightingale

The children have been learning about Florence Nightingale and Mary Seacole. The children had great fun making their own Scutari hospital and acting out the roles of Florence and injured soldiers. The children learnt all about the different herbal remedies that Mary used to treat the soldiers in her care including lemongrass, ginger, okra, lemon and aloe vera. The children had a go at using Aloe Vera on some of their cuts and grazes. They learnt that the Aloe gel does not make the cut go away but helps it to heal. They had a go at making their own herbal remedy in the form of Ginger Beer. They tasted shop bought Ginger Beer and then their own home-made beer. We think we made our Ginger Beer a bit to gingery, it was very spicy! Some of the children loved it and some of the children hated it but they all had fun making it!

Easter Activity Day

We had a great day decorating Easter biscuits for our Easter Fayre stall, making Easter cards using our fingerprints, tie-dying boiled eggs and going to look at all the Easter bonnets that children had made at home.

Jigsaw Jack

Jigsaw Jack taught us "The Green Cross Code" and how to cross the road safely. 1. Think 2. Stop 3. Look and Listen 4. Wait until it is safe to cross 5. Arrive alive!

P.E

We have been learning to play team games with a focus on throwing and aiming a ball. In this game we were human skittles! The children arranged the cones to make a bowling alley. The bowlers challenge was to throw the ball underarm at the human skittles waist height down. The human skittles challenge was to dodge the ball coming their way!

Animals Topic

The children have been learning about the different groups that animals can belong to (Amphibians, Reptiles, Insects, Birds, Fish and Mammals) as well as if they are Herbivores, Omnivores or Carnivores. The children have been researching a chosen animal using the internet and have used this information to write to the W.W.F, Greenpeace and make a fact book about different animals. We enjoyed our trip to Noah's Ark to find out some more information to help us.

Excited to be on our way!
In Independent learning time we have had great fun being curious cats and finding out about things for ourselves. We made stick puppets to retell the story of "The Hungry Caterpillar", read animal stories with each other, sorted animal picture cards into their different animal groups, made animals out of Lego, made habitats for different animals to live in as well as measuring worms using words such as cm's, longer, shorter, longest, shortest etc.

We learnt about animal hibernation and learnt how effective the fat that animals store over the winter helps the animals to survive. First we placed our hand in freezing cold water and timed how long we could sustain this. Next we placed a glove on (to act as the animals skin), then we layered lard over the glove and made a ball around our hands (this acted as the animals fat). After that we wrapped cling film around our hands (to act as the fur around the fat). We then placed our hands back in the freezing water and timed how long we could keep our hands submerged. Our hands felt very warm and sweaty!

World Book Day!

The children made a fantastic effort dressing up this year and we had a fun day learning about different authors. The teachers all made a "story in a tray" in the library and we had to use the clues to help us guess the book. As quoted in Matilda "All the reading we do, gives us a view of life we have never seen before!"

Creativity Week: Multi Cultural week - Africa

We had a go at making our own Ethiopian Chapati's. We followed a recipe by mixing flour and butter together with a little bit of water. We mixed it all together to make a dough and then kneaded it together. We placed a tea towel over our dough for 20 minutes and then tore of little balls of dough which we rolled out flat to make our chapati. Miss Basten cooked them in the frying pan and then we enjoyed eating them all up......some of us said it would have tasted better with curry!

We had an African workshop where we had a go at using different African musical instruments and then learnt an African dance.

We learnt the story of "Stone Soup". A couple of weary travellers arrive in a village and teach the villagers about the important message of sharing. The children picked what kind of villager they would like to be and role played the story in groups. These are a few freeze frames we created to tell the story.

Maths - Adding and Subtracting within 20.

In Maths we have been adding and subtracting within 20. We learnt how to make 10 first and then recombine the numbers through partitioning.

Geography - cold places

We have been learning all about the Sogne Fjord in Norway. We planned a trip for Olaf to get from Norway to Bridgwater using Google Earth and maps. We also wrote a postcard from a cold place.

Christmas Fun!

Christmas Jumper Day! We have all read at least 3 times a week for half a term!
We have all read at least 3 times a week for half a term! Our attendance has been 95%+ so we got a golden ticket!!

Computing

In Computing we have been learning how to code and debug a beebot. We wrote our codes on the mats and then tested them to check they worked. If they didn't work we debugged them and re-entered our new code. We got very excited when it worked!

R.E - Judaism

We have been learning all about Judaism. We held our own Jewish wedding in class, made a hoopla (a aisle with our hands for the bride and grrom to walk through), drank some Kiddish wine (blackcurrant juice!) smashed the glass of love, made Challah bread and shouted Mazel Tov to congratulate the newly weds.

English - Julia Donaldson

We have been learning the story of a Scarecrows' Wedding and made Betty the Scarecrow. We then wrote a set of instructions that we gave to Gardening Club so that they could make their own Scarecrow.

Having a go at making a split pin scarecrow. 1. Tie the 2 pieces of wood together with string. 2. Stuff Betty's head with straw. 3. Tie Betty's head to the pole.
4. Paint Betty's face. 5. Painting her eyes and mouth. 6. Stuffing her body with hay.

Australia

We have been learning all about Australia. William showed us some artefacts from home that his Granny had given to him. He gave us a great lesson at playing the didgeridoo.

Carnival - Parent workshops

We had great fun during our carnival topic. Parents were invited in to make a cart with their children based on a Julia Donaldson book. We had our own parade.

Fabulous Friday

We were given a box and had to use our DT and Art creative juices to make something! The children came up with making a fire engine linked to our Great Fire of London topic.
