English as an Additional Language at Westover
"One language sets you in a corridor for life. Two languages open every door along the way." - Frank Smith –
Westover Green is a multicultural school. Nearly 20% of pupils come from different countries around the globe. We promote and celebrate diversity and recognise the positive impact another language can have on a child’s learning.
We are fortunate to have the EAL base in Maple class where students, for whom English is an additional language, get extra tuition in small groups. These sessions enable children to familiarise themselves with subject specific vocabulary and benefit from pre-teaching interventions.
We foster strong supportive links with parents who are always welcome in the EAL classroom for a quick chat or a formal meeting.
We strongly believe that children should continue to use and develop their native language alongside English. We, EAL staff, are bilingual, and it is a SUPERPOWER because the more languages you know, the more open and adaptable to the world and its diversity you are.
The European Day of Languages
On Thursday 26 September Westover Green School celebrated the European Day of Languages. We did many class activities to introduce children to the notion of Europe, and the countries and languages of the continent.
There are 17 languages spoken in our school and it was fantastic to be able to highlight what we can learn from bilingual and polylingual children and adults within our school. The highlight of the day was the whole school assembly where EAL children demonstrated their talents and shared songs, dances, language and culture of their country with us all.
Merry Christmas and a very happy New Year!
