National Make Music Day!

On 21st June - it is National make Music day. We thought we could celebrate it on Friday 19th June instead. Here are some of the ways you could explore it at home! We would like to put a video together to celebrate the day so send us short videos or photos of you performing something at home - we need parental consent to do this so get your parents/carers to send them to Year6cohort@westovergreenschool.org.uk . I look forward to seeing all the music you make!

Mrs Barnes

Here is the link to the national website - it has ideas of how to perform, create and watch!

https://makemusicday.co.uk/

Make your own kind of music: Have a go at learning the song! Make it your own - you could add some of the instruments you've made!

Here is Paloma Faith's version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IV8OfUyEBh8

Create homemade percussion instruments with household items: Try creating shakers by using pasta and rice in empty bottles. You could also try using bottles either with filled with varying degrees of water or empty and scraping them with spoons or twigs to make sounds, or just upturned pans and colanders.

Make your own simple guitar: Using tissue boxes, shoe boxes without the lids or fruit punnets you can create a string-type instrument. Use the box for the base of the instrument and take four to six rubber bands. Wrap the rubber bands around the base, the long way, and make sure there is space between the rubber bands. Experiment with ways of making sounds with the bands. Also try using small pieces of sandpaper wound round a finger of each hand to rub.

Cup Song Challenge:

See if you can master it - maybe you get get a group of your family doing it! This is my attempt (it took a lot of practising)! - the tutorial and music are below.

Tutorial : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y5kYLOb6i5I

Music: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cmSbXsFE3l8

Think about and use the sounds of daily life:

For example:

  • What does the journey to the park sound like – what may we hear on the way?
  • A journey around a supermarket will involve a range of different sounds.
  • A journey to school, whether by foot, by bus or in a car will also involve a range of sounds

You could make a piece of music together that represents different types of journeys that you make using body percussion and your voice.

Use drawing to think about music: Drawing to sounds and music can be a lovely listening activity, You can draw what you hear using crayons, pencils, felt tips, paint brushes, to listen to the music and draw to the rhythm and patterns in it. You can explore this with different types of music.

Books about Coronavirus for children

Nosy Crow is an award-winning, small, independent children's book publisher. They made this free digital book because they felt that children and parents might find it useful to explain the their children what is happening in this strange time. It has been illustrated by Axel Scheffler so the children may recognise the style from books read at school. No one involved was paid anything for their work and all donations for the book go towards helping the NHS.

A note to parents...

You should have received a text message with login details for Class Dojo

The NSPCC has given advice for parents and carers when talking to a child that is worried about coronavirus (COVID-19).

Click on the image below and it will take you directly to the advice.

Dear Parents and Carers,

To keep email traffic to a minimum in the office, if you have any queries about the home learning for Year One please email Miss Basten and Mrs Willis on:

Year1cohort@westovergreenschool.org.uk

Please use the children's home learning packs to support your child at home.

We will also update this page with other learning and lessons you can complete at home.

One-to-one learning is very different to whole class teaching and group work. It is a lot more intense so you will not have to spend as much of your day completing focused learning tasks.

Have Fun, talk, play games, help your children understand a little on what is going on. Be practical, make things, bake things, tell them about when you were younger. A happy child will learn.

  • Also, being in the garden and growing plants or looking for wildlife...it is science!
  • Baking in the kitchen....it is maths!
  • Learning about different countries, our local environment...it is geography!
  • Using technology...it is computing!
  • Building something with boxes...it is DT!
  • Writing instructions for designs...it is English!

You don't have to be sitting at the kitchen table every day. Do what makes you and your child happy throughout this very strange time.

From all of us in Year One, we hope to see you all really soon but for now keep smiling, have fun and take care.

Today is VE Day, a day to celebrate.

Victory in Europe Day/VE Day took place on May 8th 1945. It was a public holiday and a day of celebration to mark the defeat of Germany by the Allied forces in World War 2. This year marks the 75th anniversary of VE Day and lots of celebrations were due to take place. Unfortunately, these have all had to be cancelled because of Covid-19. Below are some activities and ideas for you to try at home and perhaps create your own celebrations.

National History Museum Lego challenge

Calling all budding astrobiologists!

The National History Museum have launched a free activity called Lego Life Form. Carry on reading for a message direct from The National History Museum...

Your mission

The LEGO Group and the Natural History Museum are challenging you to predict what life could look like in other parts of the universe.

Every Wednesday for four weeks we will be introducing a new environment, inspired by a real moon or exoplanet in our galaxy.

Build

Use your imagination to build your own LEGO® Life Form that could survive in that environment. You'll need to think carefully about what adaptations life might need to survive in those conditions. You can use LEGO bricks or any materials you have around the house.

Share

As all scientists do, make sure you share your ideas! Share your life forms with us and tell us how they are adapted. Use #NHMLEGO and tag @NHM_Learn and @LEGO_Group to share.

Click on the Link to find out more … https://www.nhm.ac.uk/events/lego-life-forms.html

BBC Bitesize.

The link for BBC Bitesize is as follows- www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/dailylessons

Please follow the link to access the daily lessons as detailed under the weekly lessons.

Reading

Audio book

Every day at 11am David Walliams is reading one of his "World's Worst Children" stories. So...sit back, relax and take 20 minutes of relaxing away from the table of home learning and enjoy!

Oxford Owl

To aid your child's reading at home, Oxford Owl are providing lots of free online reading resources suitable for each reading level. These books will support your child's learning and let them enjoy a range of stories.

There are lots of elements around reading. You could ask you child to predict what they think is going to happen, check understanding of unusual words, work on fluency and expression, and ask questions about the story to check their comprehension. To challenge your child even further they could use their home learning books to write a story similar to what they have read, write a book review saying what they like or dislike about the story or draw a picture of their favourite part.

Oxford owl is free to use, click on the 'Oxford owl for home' tab and once you create an account lots of Ebooks are available for you and your child to enjoy. Click on the link below to take you to their webpage.

English and Handwriting - Please continue to do Pobble every morning :-)

Every morning the children usually come into School and write sentences about a picture found on Pobble in their red handwriting books. We use three writing prompts to help the children organise their thoughts.

I see... I think... I wonder....

Each day there is a different picture to capture the children's imagination. Allow them to be as creative as possible using a capital letter at the beginning of their sentence and a full stop to mark the end. Below is a link to the Pobble site and also a phoneme mat that the children are familiar with to help them with their phonics, to sound out and write the words.

Purple Mash

We have also set up an account for you child on Purple Mash. Logins have gone home with the children already but for those that have already self -isolated we will send these to you in the post.

Purple Mash (see link below) is a online publishing site where the children can create stories, posters, leaflets and fact files etc. There is also links to different topics including animals which is our current topic at school. Please have fun with this and be as creative as you can.

Below are some handwriting guidance sheets to help with your child's letter formation. They can use these alongside the handwriting practise sheets in their home-learning packs.

These handwriting sheets contain the first 100 high frequency words that your child needs to learn.

Please practise reading and writing these words as little or as often as you can. The other pages can be found in your packs.

Maths

Our current topic in Maths is Numbers to 50 as well as measure (height and length). Please use the power points attached for each day at the top of this page. There is lots of additional Maths if you need it in the Home Learning packs.

Numbots

We have also set up an account for your child with "NumBots". These will be sent out to you on Friday 20th March. If you have already self - isolated we will send these to you in the post. The children create their own robot and have to help Rusty and his friends by completing mathematical challenges to progress through the games and unlock levels. Coins have to be earned and spent on items in the scrap shop...Have fun!!

Phonics

At School we use Phonics Play to enhance our teaching. Phonics Play have given parents free access during the CV-19 outbreak which you can access using the following login:

Username: march20 Password: home

Please use the work set at the top of this page as directed but also encourage the children to play on any phase 5 game whenever they can to develop their phonics skills.

Be creative

We have a new art challenge for you to enjoy. Why not try our new 30 day drawing challenge?

Why not try our 25 day drawing challenge? You can use your home learning books to record your challenge. You could even write about what you have drawn. This should be fun so be as adventurous as you would like to be. :)

If you enjoy building why not try our 30 day Lego challenge? if you complete the challenge you could also have ago at making your own challenge to challenge your friends with on our return to school.

PE

Here is our alphabet fitness game. Can you complete the challenge of creating your name with the exercises?

Can you complete the exercises to spell out other peoples names or even your favourite characters name? Have fun and see what fitness programmes you can create.

Easter activities

There is a different activity to enjoy each day. Click on the link below to access them all. :)
