Message Board for Children
Message Board for Parents and Carers
We would like to share with you a short video, sent to us by Dave Huxtable, The Pinkery Centre Manager. Following the disappointment of having to temporarily close The Pinkery Centre, Dave has created this video to show some of the ways that 'The Pinkery Experience' could be re-created a little closer to home. Enjoy!
Dear Parents and Carers,
One-to-one learning is very different to whole class teaching and group work. It is a lot more intense so you will not have to spend as much of your day completing focused learning tasks.
Have Fun, talk, play games, help your children understand a little of what is going on. Be practical, make things, bake things, tell them about when you were younger. A happy child will learn.
- Also, being in the garden and growing plants or looking for wildlife...it is science!
- Baking in the kitchen....it is maths!
- Learning about different countries, our local environment...it is geography!
- Using technology...it is computing!
- Building something with boxes...it is DT!
- Writing instructions for designs...it is English!
You don't have to be sitting at the kitchen table every day. Do what makes you and your child happy throughout this very strange time.
In the meantime, if you can stay at home please do, stay safe, keep smiling and we will look forward to when we can be back at school together again.
The Year 4 team.

National Make Music Day!
On 21st June - it is National make Music day. We thought we could celebrate it on Friday 19th June instead. Here are some of the ways you could explore it at home! We would like to put a video together to celebrate the day so send us short videos or photos of you performing something at home - we need parental consent to do this so get your parents/carers to send them to Year6cohort@westovergreenschool.org.uk . I look forward to seeing all the music you make!
Mrs Barnes
Here is the link to the national website - it has ideas of how to perform, create and watch!
Make your own kind of music: Have a go at learning the song! Make it your own - you could add some of the instruments you've made!
Here is Paloma Faith's version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IV8OfUyEBh8
Create homemade percussion instruments with household items: Try creating shakers by using pasta and rice in empty bottles. You could also try using bottles either with filled with varying degrees of water or empty and scraping them with spoons or twigs to make sounds, or just upturned pans and colanders.
Make your own simple guitar: Using tissue boxes, shoe boxes without the lids or fruit punnets you can create a string-type instrument. Use the box for the base of the instrument and take four to six rubber bands. Wrap the rubber bands around the base, the long way, and make sure there is space between the rubber bands. Experiment with ways of making sounds with the bands. Also try using small pieces of sandpaper wound round a finger of each hand to rub.
Cup Song Challenge:
See if you can master it - maybe you get get a group of your family doing it! This is my attempt (it took a lot of practising)! - the tutorial and music are below.
Tutorial : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y5kYLOb6i5I
Music: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cmSbXsFE3l8
Think about and use the sounds of daily life:
For example:
- What does the journey to the park sound like – what may we hear on the way?
- A journey around a supermarket will involve a range of different sounds.
- A journey to school, whether by foot, by bus or in a car will also involve a range of sounds
You could make a piece of music together that represents different types of journeys that you make using body percussion and your voice.
Use drawing to think about music: Drawing to sounds and music can be a lovely listening activity, You can draw what you hear using crayons, pencils, felt tips, paint brushes, to listen to the music and draw to the rhythm and patterns in it. You can explore this with different types of music.
Music Lessons:
There are some great lessons on BBC Teach - pick one you like the look of and have a go!

These lessons follow a 12 week plan created in partnership with the BBC to help ensure pupils are ready to return to school in September.
As a result of the partnership for Home Learning between White Rose Maths and BBC Bitesize, there will be some repetition of recent learning objectives during weeks 7, 8 and 9. This should then resolve in week 10.
During weeks 7, 8 and 9, you can follow the lessons above for consolidation, or have a go at the lessons and the 'Fluency, Reasoning and Problem Solving' activities below, if you do not need consolidation of fractions and decimals.
MyMaths will be updated with daily lessons to support this learning. Follow the link and use your password to login.
Also, keep working on your times-table fluency. Look out from Battle of the Bands - there is currently teachers Vs Students.

Wellbeing and Mindfulness
Each week, as part of their Home Learning with BBC Bitesize, the BBC will be adding a 'Wellbeing' lesson. The purpose of these lessons is to help you to understand your feelings and what's happening in the world around you (something that is very important at the moment). They are also designed to make you feel good; show you how amazing you are; recognise your strengths and take ownership of your areas for development.
This week, the Bitesize focus is on Teamwork (click on the image below to go this week's lesson).
In addition to these lessons, we have some other resources and activities to share with you.
Cosmic Kids Yoga (on Youtube) has many fun and colourful Yoga adventures. You can choose from themes such as Harry Potter, Trolls, Frozen, Moana, Star Wars and Minecraft! Have a go at some and use Class Dojo to tell us your favourite. Click on the image below to find the YouTube channel, but remember to always check with your parents/ carers before visiting YouTube.
As you know, we think Newsround is great for making us aware and helping us make sense of what is going on in the world.
