National Make Music Day!
On 21st June - it is National make Music day. We thought we could celebrate it on Friday 19th June instead. Here are some of the ways you could explore it at home! We would like to put a video together to celebrate the day so send us short videos or photos of you performing something at home - we need parental consent to do this so get your parents/carers to send them to Year6cohort@westovergreenschool.org.uk . I look forward to seeing all the music you make!
Mrs Barnes
Here is the link to the national website - it has ideas of how to perform, create and watch!
Make your own kind of music: Have a go at learning the song! Make it your own - you could add some of the instruments you've made!
Here is Paloma Faith's version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IV8OfUyEBh8
Create homemade percussion instruments with household items: Try creating shakers by using pasta and rice in empty bottles. You could also try using bottles either with filled with varying degrees of water or empty and scraping them with spoons or twigs to make sounds, or just upturned pans and colanders.
Make your own simple guitar: Using tissue boxes, shoe boxes without the lids or fruit punnets you can create a string-type instrument. Use the box for the base of the instrument and take four to six rubber bands. Wrap the rubber bands around the base, the long way, and make sure there is space between the rubber bands. Experiment with ways of making sounds with the bands. Also try using small pieces of sandpaper wound round a finger of each hand to rub.
Cup Song Challenge:
See if you can master it - maybe you get get a group of your family doing it! This is my attempt (it took a lot of practising)! - the tutorial and music are below.
Tutorial : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y5kYLOb6i5I
Music: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cmSbXsFE3l8
Think about and use the sounds of daily life:
For example:
- What does the journey to the park sound like – what may we hear on the way?
- A journey around a supermarket will involve a range of different sounds.
- A journey to school, whether by foot, by bus or in a car will also involve a range of sounds
You could make a piece of music together that represents different types of journeys that you make using body percussion and your voice.
Use drawing to think about music: Drawing to sounds and music can be a lovely listening activity, You can draw what you hear using crayons, pencils, felt tips, paint brushes, to listen to the music and draw to the rhythm and patterns in it. You can explore this with different types of music.
Music Lessons:
There are some great lessons on BBC Teach - pick one you like the look of and have a go!

Note for Parents and Carers
The NSPCC has given advice for parents and carers when talking to a child that is worried about coronavirus (COVID-19).
Click on the image below and it will take you directly to the advice.
You should have received a text message with login details for Class Dojo.
Thank you for those of you who have already shared your work.
Thank you for visiting our home learning page. Some of you have joined us back at school in the last couple of weeks and it has been great to see so many of you with big smiles to greet us with. If you are continuing your home learning then please know we are thinking of you.
We will continue to upload ideas weekly based on learning we are completing in school. We will continue to look at Class Dojo to see all of your wonderful learning and creations but this will be around our school hours and as we are also teaching in school you will need to bear with us.
This page is designed to give you ideas and to help with learning whilst at home. Your children will require extra support and time for them to talk about worries and thoughts they may have.
Books about Coronavirus for children
There are a few books which have been published to help discuss the coronavirus with children which include a book by Noisy Crow.
Noisy Crow is an award-winning, small, independent children's book publisher. They have made this free digital book because they felt that children and parents might find it useful to explain to their children about what is happening during this strange time. It has been illustrated by Axel Scheffler so the children may recognise the pictures from books they have read at school. No one involved has been paid for any of their work and all donations raised by the book will go towards helping the NHS.
